Data and methods
The seas around Korea (117–142°E, 24–46°N) are shown as a 3-D block. Bathymetry is from GEBCO_2019 (15″ grid averaged to 1/30°); temperature, salinity and currents are from the U.S. Navy HYCOM ESPC-D-V02 global forecast.
Processing
- The 3-hourly output of the 8-day forecast issued at (12 UTC run) is averaged into daily means in Korea Standard Time (eight fields per day). Tides, inertial oscillations and other short-period variability are removed by the averaging.
- The 0.08° × 0.04° model grid is block-averaged over 2 × 4 cells to about 0.16° (about 15 km). Of the 40 model levels, the 31 levels between 0 and 5,000 m are used, with linear interpolation between levels.
- Below 5,000 m (trenches) there are no model data; these areas are hatched. Where the model seafloor differs from GEBCO, the gap is shown in grey.
- Water-mass isosurfaces are rendered by ray marching through the temperature field, drawing the chosen isotherm and the water inside it semi-transparently.
- θ in the T–S diagram is potential temperature converted from in-situ temperature with the UNESCO (1983) formula; density contours are σθ (EOS-80).
- The “square root” vertical scale makes height proportional to the square root of depth, so that the shallow Yellow Sea and the deep East Sea fit on one screen. Terrain shapes are therefore distorted; read depths from the scale on the box corner.
Caveats
- All values are numerical model forecasts, not observations. Salinity near coasts, in shallow water and around river mouths may have large errors.
- With a grid of about 15 km, narrow straits and small eddies are not well resolved. Not for navigation or other safety-critical use.
